HERO13 Antiflicker Bug: How-To (part 1)
Antiflicker is a function designed to eliminate the flickering caused by artificial lights, such as LEDs or fluorescent tubes, which pulse at the frequency of the power grid (50Hz in Europe, 60Hz in the USA). The system works by limiting the shutter speed to values synchronized with these frequencies, preventing the phenomenon from appearing in the video as a constant pulse in brightness or as horizontal stripes (banding) across the image. A bug in the GoPro HERO13 occurs when the antiflicker system interferes with the shutter adjustment. In conditions of bright sunlight and low ISO, the camera attempts to lock the shutter speed at fixed values to avoid non-existent flickering, causing abrupt and jerky brightness shifts in the footage instead of a natural transition. For example, in the first video of the green sea turtle filmed at Marsa Shoona, Egypt, at only a couple of meters deep, the ISO at 100 and the shutter speed at 1/120 caused those brightness jumps that irremediably compromised the shot.
The BFLK=1 extension, activated via QR Code on the GoPro Labs firmware, solves the problem by eliminating the software constraints designed to avoid light bulb flickering, which are entirely useless outdoors. GoPro Labs engineers recommend, in fact, keeping this command active on HERO13 cameras used in outdoor environments to ensure consistently precise exposure. By performing the same shot simultaneously (video number two) with a second HERO13 set to the Natural color profile, the problem did not occur because this mode applies dynamic tone-mapping that manages to mask the shutter jumps.
