For those who use the GoPro Labs firmware, camera customization is done via well-established tools: the QR Control smartphone app for in-the-field adjustments, and the official GoPro QR Code Creator page for desktop.
These are now joined by a third way, as innovative as it is powerful: a conversational assistant (a custom GPT) created by the brilliant David Newman, that transforms the way settings are planned.
Instead of navigating through menus or writing code, with this tool, you have a dialogue. The user can describe the desired configuration in natural language, without too much thought. It’s an approach that shifts the focus from “how to do it” to “what you want to achieve,” making the process faster and more intuitive.
Let’s imagine we need to prepare for a dive. Instead of setting one command at a time, you can simply write a request like this:
“Tomorrow I’m diving in the Red Sea. Set me up with a configuration with stabilization for a refractive index of 1.341, no noise reduction, and a Bitrate of 190. Lock the white balance at the start of the video and increase WARM to 25. On startup, I’d like to see the active settings for at least 5 seconds. Then make me a second QR code with the same parameters but with WARM at 50 for the first part of the dive when I’ll be deeper.”
The assistant will interpret the request and in a few moments, it will generate not only the correct code string but also the QR Code image file, ready to be downloaded directly from the chat. The response will be something like this:
