Siyal Island: a touch of the Maldives on the Sudanese border
Sometimes, the most unexpected places offer the strongest emotions. This was the case for me with Siyal Island, which I discovered in August 2023 during a diving cruise to St. John’s, Egypt.
Siyal is incredibly remote: it lies 5 nautical miles south of the Abu Fendera dive site and only 60 from the Sudanese border. This location makes it an exceptionally rare destination, and for this reason, still wild and almost untouched. But Siyal’s true uniqueness, beyond its isolation, is its ecological importance: it is a crucial nesting site for the rare White-eyed Gull (Ichthyaetus leucophthalmus), a species that lives only in these waters.
Proprio per proteggere i nidi di questi uccelli, quando si scende a terra bisogna seguire regole molto precise: si può camminare solo sulla sabbia e su percorsi indicati per evitare di calpestare le uova, spesso ben mimetizzate. È un piccolo sforzo, essenziale per preservare questo delicato ecosistema.
E poi c’è l’impatto visivo. La prima cosa che mi ha colpito, scendendo sulla spiaggia, è stata la sabbia, bianchissima, che contrastava con l’acqua turchese della laguna. In quel momento, con il silenzio rotto solo dal richiamo dei gabbiani, ho pensato davvero: “Sembra di essere alle Maldive!”
L’Isola di Siyal non è solo un’isola sperduta; è un monito alla bellezza fragile del nostro pianeta e un ricordo che conservo con cura.
Precisely to protect the nests of these birds, when going ashore, very strict rules must be followed: you can only walk on the sand and on marked paths to avoid stepping on the eggs, which are often well-camouflaged. It’s a small effort, essential for preserving this delicate ecosystem.
And then there’s the visual impact. The first thing that struck me, upon stepping onto the beach, was the strikingly white sand, contrasting with the turquoise water of the lagoon. In that moment, with the silence broken only by the calls of the gulls, I genuinely thought: “It’s like being in the Maldives!”
Siyal Island is not just a remote island; it’s a reminder of the fragile beauty of our planet and a memory I cherish.
