To achieve high-level results, it is essential to move past the idea of a standard configuration and learn to adapt parameters based on the specific conditions of the day: water visibility, operating depth, ambient light, and the color temperature of the seabed drastically affect image quality. Since the protective housing prevents the use of the touchscreen, modifying GoPro settings underwater presents several challenges. This significantly limits flexibility, effectively allowing only for preset selection through the “secret menu” (which we will explore later).
Consequently, before diving, it is vital to dedicate proper attention to configuring the most suitable parameters for the specific dive: an indispensable step for successful underwater videos. This is a crucial choice because it defines the character of the image even before recording begins.
The Standard profile is ideal for obtaining videos with saturated and realistic colors without having to intervene excessively in post-production. Underwater, it is particularly useful as it compensates for the natural diffusion of light—which tends to make images look flat and dull—by restoring sharper contrast and greater clarity.
There is also the HDR (High Dynamic Range) option, which emphasizes details that usually blend into the shadows or disappear in highlights. While excellent for land environments, I advise against using it for underwater filming: by trying to forcibly brighten shadow areas, HDR often ends up introducing significant digital noise (grain) into the image.
Finally, there is the Log profile (GP-Log), which produces a “flatter” and less contrasted image. The footage appears “faded” compared to a standard profile because it is not designed for direct viewing, but rather to be developed using LUTs (Look Up Tables) in post-production. I advise against this profile for those who do not have a strong mastery of color correction, as it requires significant time and specific skills.
My default setting is the Standard profile, which I often pair with the Flat color mode to allow for greater flexibility in color management during editing.

<div class="elementor-element settings can vary depending on the situation between the 8:7 and 16:9 formats.
The 16:9 format (Widescreen – horizontal) is the standard for TVs and monitors. It is recommended if you only publish on YouTube or similar platforms and is mandatory if you want to use a wide-angle lens.
The 9:16 format (Vertical) is only suitable for mobile phones.
The full 8:7 format uses the entire sensor, offering maximum flexibility: you can crop it without losing quality to create both horizontal and vertical videos (ideal for Stories and Reels). Therefore, if you own a recent GoPro and want to use multiple social platforms, it is preferable to use 8:7; otherwise, 4:3 represents a valid alternative.
In all cases, I advise against using 9:16 (GoPro vertically) because too much of the scene is lost on the sides, almost always making it difficult to frame the subject well (this is based on my experience).

Resolution

Resolution determines the level of detail and sharpness of your videos. This ensures that the resulting files maintain the maximum dynamic range necessary for professional color grading and correction workflows.
To access these advanced settings on all recent models, Professional Controls must first be enabled within the camera menu. Once this mode is activated, the complete Protune suite becomes fully accessible and can be managed individually within each specific preset.
It is essential to understand that any adjustments made to Protune parameters are strictly tied to the specific Preset currently in use. The only two ways to modify settings while diving are using custom presets or employing QR Codes via GoPro Labs (covered in a specific section). Presets must be configured in advance: enter the video mode settings, select the “+” icon in the top right, and create a new custom profile. After defining the parameters, you proceed with assigning a specific identifier; this operation is available directly on-camera for the HERO13, while on the HERO12 they can only be renamed via the Quik app (this feature is not available on earlier models).Once in the water, to switch between configurations using only physical buttons, you use the so-called “secret menu”: by holding down the Mode button and simultaneously pressing the Shutter button, the full list of saved presets appears on the display. This operation requires extreme precision: if the buttons are not pressed simultaneously, it will often just trigger a HiLight tag instead of opening the menu, but with a bit of practice, the command becomes immediate. Once the list is active on the screen, use the Mode button to scroll through the different entries and the Shutter button to confirm your selection, ensuring the camera is perfectly set for the next
