data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The evening before the dive, I dedicate myself to preparing the necessary microSD cards, proceeding to format them (a process made much faster by using the GoPro Labs \u201c!FORMAT\u201d QR Code &#8211; as shown in the video). Naturally, before doing so, I always ensure that all clips have been correctly saved to the Hard Drive.<br \/>To avoid the risk of accidentally deleting footage (a mistake I have unfortunately made in the past), I never reuse the card already inserted in the GoPro, thus avoiding the need to delete data from the previous dive. This means that, for every camera, I bring at least two microSD cards on vacation.<br \/>Next, I carefully evaluate the conditions expected for the following day&#8217;s dive\u2014such as the time (crucial for estimating available light), maximum depth, and expected visibility\u2014in order to immediately set the most suitable Preset. Although these settings can be modified just before entering the water or even during the dive, I prefer to always have a base configuration ready.<br \/>A fundamental check concerns the protective housing&#8217;s O-ring, which must be perfectly clean and free of cuts or abrasions. I close the housing with extreme care, performing a meticulous check: I verify that the O-ring is not pinched and that it is perfectly clean, free of any residue like hair or dust.<br \/>Once this is done, I always turn on the camera to check the actual charge level, a crucial step to avoid the unpleasant surprise of arriving at the entry point with a partially drained battery.<br \/>Moments before entering the water, I carefully secure the rig (whether it is a pole or a tray with stabilizer arms) to my BCD, strictly checking that the clips are closed.<br \/>Since I almost always use one or more GoPros to film the entry as well, I ensure in advance that they are powered on and ready.<br \/>During the jump, I always keep a firm grip on my equipment: experience has taught me that entering and exiting the water are often the most hectic phases, and I have seen too many cameras lost or damaged precisely during these moments.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div It is crucial never to improvise: if a fish approaches, you must already have the framing and ideal position in mind to capture it perfectly, because being in the right place at the right time can truly make a difference. Planning your movements also helps you make better use of light and your positioning relative to it\u2014a factor that must always be considered.<br \/>For correct positioning, I always keep the sun behind me (unless I am intentionally seeking a dramatic backlit effect) and try not to include other divers or their bubbles in the frame, unless they are the actual protagonists of the scene.<br \/>While filming, I already think about which platform will host my video\u2014whether YouTube and my website (16:9 format) or Stories and Reels for social media (9:16 format)\u2014and I mentally visualize the corresponding crops on the screen. This ensures that subjects remain within the frame, avoiding the accidental exclusion of important parts of the scene.<br \/>If I am filming specifically for social media, I use the GoPro Labs GUID function. <br \/>This feature displays framing guides on the screen for different aspect ratios. For example, by setting the value 0.5625, I activate the vertical 9:16 guide. My friends know me well by now: for me, during dives, there are no &#8220;grey areas.&#8221;<br \/>Let me explain. At the beginning, following a proper dive profile, I immediately reach maximum depth. There are valid reasons to descend to 40 meters: hammerheads at Daedalus, the depths of the Thomas Reef canyon in Sharm el-Sheikh, grey reef sharks at the bottom of a Maldivian pass, or the Thistlegorm&#8217;s propeller. At these depths, I am well aware that the footage will never be perfectly crystal clear or bright, but I try to turn the situation to my advantage: I focus on getting close to the subjects or creating dramatic backlit effects using the bathymetry, canyons, or wreck silhouettes.<br \/>Subsequently, I ascend, following my computer&#8217;s instructions, quickly moving above 12-10 meters. This is where I find abundant footage, avoiding lingering in what I call &#8220;no man&#8217;s land&#8221;\u2014the zone between 15 and 30 meters. In this intermediate zone, it is often difficult to encounter interesting animals (and if they do pass, I can always drop down in a second), and there is a lack of both lush coral and sufficient light to achieve vibrant colors and sharp, high-contrast images.<br \/>I see too many videographers spending most of their time in that exact zone, only to wonder, at the end of the dive, why my clips In dawn dives, a privileged moment for the most spectacular pelagic encounters, one must account for low light and often limited visibility; colors will appear duller and, especially at depth, the image will suffer from evident noise.<br \/>Moving towards late morning, however, with the sun already high, the light improves drastically, allowing the depth range down to 15-20 meters to offer sharp, color-rich images.<br \/>During the central hours of the day, light falls vertically, strong and direct, creating intense reflections, sharp shadows, and ensuring maximum detail vibrancy.<br \/>In the afternoon, the atmosphere changes again: the light softens, becoming warm and golden, an ideal condition for filming backlit silhouettes against the surface.<br \/>At twilight, finally, brightness drops rapidly, making clips very &#8220;noisy&#8221; and making the use of artificial lights indispensable for obtaining acceptable results.<br \/><br \/><strong>Digital Noise (Video Noise)<\/strong><br \/>This is a visual disturbance that appears as a crawling grain or a series of random colored dots that clutter the image, degrading its sharpness. Technically, this is what happens: the sensor generates an electrical signal when struck by light, but physically also produces a small amount of base electrical interference, the so-called background noise.<br \/>When light is abundant, the image signal is significantly stronger than the background noise, resulting in clean footage. <br \/>Conversely, if light is scarce, the signal is weak, and the camera is forced to digitally amplify it by increasing the ISO.
