This step is essential to remove salt buildup, preventing corrosion. It\u2019s also useful to include accessories like the telescopic pole, making sure to open and close it a couple of times underwater to allow the water to flow through. <br>Leave everything in soak for a while to let the salt dissolve completely. After rinsing, gently dry the camera and accessories with a soft cloth, paying attention to any traces of sand that could scratch the lenses. At this juncture, it is crucial to perform a meticulous inspection for any signs of moisture ingress or water droplets; should such be detected, O-ring replacement may be warranted or, in more severe instances, replacement of the entire housing. The battery must be removed from the GoPro (initiating charging only after it has fully cooled down), and the housing should be left open to air dry. If a telescopic pole was utilized, it should be allowed to dry in its extended state, and subsequently, its mechanism should be lubricated using a WD-40 type spray lubricant or similar, by actuating it (opening and closing it) multiple times. It is essential to handle the SD card only with completely dry and clean hands. As soon as practicable, reviewing the footage on a computer is advisable. This is crucial to verify successful capture and to check for any incorrect settings or egregious errors, thereby preventing their recurrence in subsequent dives. Footage quality should never be assessed solely on the GoPro&#8217;s integrated display, as it may obscure imperfections that are only discernible on larger, higher-resolution This will make future searches and editing much easier. <br \/>To save storage space, it\u2019s advised to delete all files that couldn\u2019t be assigned a name, as they likely don\u2019t contain important parts you might want to use later. For quicker retrieval, tags and metadata with keywords and descriptions can also be employed. <br \/>It\u2019s also crucial to perform regular backups to always have two copies of each file. to Full HD (1920\u00d71080 pixels). At this stage, I import the clip into the timeline and proceed to adjust the exposure utilizing the <em>Color Wheels<\/em>. The objective is to leverage the full available dynamic range, bringing the shadows close to 0 IRE and the highlights close to 100 IRE, while ensuring no detail is clipped in critical image regions.<br \/>To achieve this with precision, I activate the <em>Luma Range Check<\/em> tool. As I lower the shadows, the Range Check indicator will flash if any area falls below 0 IRE, thereby preserving detail.<br \/>The same procedure is applied to the highlights: I increase them incrementally, and the Range Check will flash if they exceed 100 IRE. I stop the adjustment just before critical highlight regions, such as fish scales or light-colored coral, begin to trigger the flashing indicator. Naturally, I am not concerned if specular highlights, such as the sun disc in a backlit shot, trigger the indicator, as this is an expected occurrence in such scenarios.<br \/>With the shadows and highlights appropriately established, I make a subtle adjustment to the Midtones to balance the overall exposure. Generally, the most refined ones are often paid, but they offer more sophisticated results and are worth a small investment. Technically, a LUT (Look-Up Table) is a data file that acts as a &#8220;translator&#8221; for colors. It contains no images, but rather a series of instructions that tell the software exactly how to transform the look of the footage.<br \/>The operating principle is comparable to a conversion table: instead of performing complex manual calculations for every single pixel, the system reads the original color of the shot and instantly replaces it with the correct value indicated in the table. It is a direct mapping process that allows for the modification of the entire color range extremely quickly and efficiently.<br \/>Modern 3D LUTs, used in video editing, organize this information within a three-dimensional space. This allows primary colors (red, green, and blue) to interact with each other organically: modifying one tint can influence the luminosity or saturation of the others, ensuring complex and natural results that would be difficult to replicate with simple basic adjustments.<br \/>Finally, to manage the infinite colors present in the real world without burdening the system, a LUT uses a grid of main reference points.\u00a0<\/p><p>For all intermediate shades not explicitly written in the file, the software automatically calculates the correct value by &#8220;connecting the dots,&#8221; thus ensuring that the video&#8217;s gradients remain smooth and continuous.<br \/>These tools work by digitally reversing this phenomenon to restore original colors, while simultaneously offering a quick starting point for color grading that significantly speeds up the workflow.<br \/>However, applying these color tables in an aquatic environment presents unique and far more complex challenges compared to surface shooting. While outside it is often possible to correct entire sequences with a single LUT, underwater the physical light conditions change drastically with every minimal variation in depth, distance from the subject, or water turbidity. Consequently, finding the suitable correction is almost never an immediate or universal process, but represents a true challenge requiring time and sensitivity: what works perfectly for one clip might be inadequate just a few meters deeper, often making careful specific selection and further manual refinements necessary for every single shot.<br \/>During the early stages of my path as a filmmaker, my approach to color grading relied mainly on free resources available online. However, as my technique refined, I realized that to raise the quality standard of one&#8217;s work, it is necessary to invest in professional tools rather than settling for generic solutions.<br \/>The first step in this direction was purchasing the packages offered by UW Lunatic: Leviathan and Calypso.<br \/>Of the 11 LUTs included in the Leviathan set, my use has been quite limited; these profiles remain excellent, however, for compensating waters with strong green casts, typical of specific scenarios like the Shark Tank dive in Hulhumal\u00e9 (Maldives).<br \/>Much more versatile and interesting proved to be the Calypso package (7 LUTs), within which I found fundamental profiles for my corrections, particularly &#8220;Deep Light&#8221; and &#8220;Shallow&#8221;.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/uwlunatic.art\/product-category\/digital-products\/presets-luts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[Discover UW Lunatic LUTs]<\/a><\/p><p>In a constant pursuit of workflow optimization, the post-production toolkit has been integrated with the Underwater LUTs by grade-co.com, which have recently undergone a major update. These tools are available for both Standard and LOG profiles, categorized into three specialized sets: Freediving grading, Recovery, and Scuba recovery tools.<\/p><p>The Freediving collection provides significant creative insights and a variety of effective solutions for underwater color correction. Among the most notable presets are Anemone, Coral, Pelagic, Plunge, Thalas, and Voyager.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/gradeco.store\/products\/mobile-grading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[Discover Grade.co LUTs]<\/a><br \/>n the example clips, the LUTs were intentionally applied directly to the raw footage, omitting preliminary exposure and white balance corrections. In this step, shaping the curve, I create the classic \u201c<i>S-curve<\/i>\u201d (or contrast curve): I slightly lower the point that manages the shadows (located in the lower left part of the curve) and slightly raise the highlights (in the upper right). I can also add intermediate points to better regulate the slope in the midtones. The effect is to increase the overall contrast, improving the separation between different tonal ranges. This happens because the LUT acts globally, modifying the entire image without distinction. This is where a powerful tool comes into play: the \u201c<i>Magnetic Mask\u201d<\/i>, which allows you to automatically select the main subject and separate it from the background. Thanks to the mask, I apply targeted corrections: I slightly increase the saturation of the oranges and reds on the shell and reduce the blue tones on its skin, restoring a more natural white appearance.
